We will be leaving from Hope Church in a 55 passenger bus driven by one of our favorite Winn Transportation bus drivers and traveling to camp together. The bus will make 1-2 stops along the way for lunch and a stretch break, but the bathroom facilities on the bus mean students will have access to the restroom the whole trip. The same bus will bring them home and information about departure and arrival times will be shared closer to camp.
We do our very best to honor any roommate requests but all lodging will be coordinated by the camp who is hosting us, so we won’t have room details until closer. Most often the rooming is two or more per room, in either a dorm room or a traditional bunk room situation, and we only share rooms with our church group. Our entire group will be together for meals, activities, and teaching/worship time. Our summer interns go to camp as our staff and leaders who will stay in the same living space as the students.
There are many reasons why not having phones, devices, and smart watches is a good idea for camp. Our best practice is to limit this connection to the internet due to its nature of easy access to unhealthy content. Our past attendees also will overwhelmingly say that not being tethered to a device throughout camp made the experience richer and more meaningful. And probably most obvious is the fact that camp is high energy, fun activity experience and the risk of loss or damage to a device in the pocket or on the wrist is high.
That said, we would never deny access to a parent and we allow students to use a phone for a call home anytime they ask. They can talk to their small group leader or any of the staff attending camp and we will make space for that phone call. And reversely if you need to contact them for some reason, you will be provided at registration with phone numbers to access staff and we will quickly work to find the student and give you a chance to chat. But we do ask that you limit that to emergencies only and let your student guide the communication throughout the week. You may be surprised at how fast the camp time passes and they are less anxious about phones as the week progresses.
Registering for camp with us is what will secure your student’s spot at camp. If you have any questions about camp, please direct them to us. Do not contact Generate YM360 or The Great Escape.
